About the Course
In this short course the students will learn about the modern carbonate environments, specifically Coral Reef systems. Students will learn about the past, present, and future of these systems, as well as, the organisms and sediments making these reefs, their composition, minerology, and texture. Students will learn about different depositional environments including forereef, reef flat and lagoon. The course will also focus on the effect of modern-sea-level rise in eroding and inundating islands associated with these settings.

About the Instructor
Dr. Pankaj Khanna is a Carbonate Sedimentologist in the Discipline of Earth Sciences at IIT Gandhinagar. Pankaj’s work integrates both field and laboratory investigations, from modern to ancient reefs, and from qualitative to quantitative assessment of carbonate depositional systems. He has conducted fieldwork and training on three continents and in more than ten countries from India to Americas. He has worked on/studied modern reefs in Gulf of Mexico, Belize, Maldives, and currently working on Lakshadweep reefs. He has also participated on a research expedition onboard R/V Falkor, mapping south Texas banks (south Texas Shelf), as well as led a research expedition in Red Sea (Al-Wajh)

About the Course
Learning about contemporary practices regarding engineering solutions to tackle freshwater scarcity needs no further emphasis. Government and private agencies working in this field expect young civil, chemical and mechanical engineers to help them in planning, designing and executing of schemes for conveyance, treatment and reuse of sewage.

In view of the above, it is proposed to conduct a short course, ‘Apna Jal – Reuse of Treated Wastewater. The course is useful for Civil, Chemical and Mechanical stream engineering students aspiring for jobs in water sector.

This version of the short course is expected to make students aware of challenges and emerging engineering concepts to overcome those challenges. Guidelines and BIS codes issued recently regarding the reuse of treated wastewater (now called ‘Apna Jal’) will be discussed. In a nutshell - Planning, designing and mandatory issues related to the management of sewage, including its reuse rather than discharge will be taught.

About the Instructor
BE Civil (1982, IITR(UoR)), M Tech Env Engg (1991, IITK), MBA (2011, KSOU), Retired Chief Engineer (2020, HAG Grade) from MES (IDSE Cadre). Empanelled as PHE Expert under ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ of the Ministry of Urban and recognized PHE expert of MES of Ministry of Defence. Apart from other infrastructure works of MES, planned, Designed, tendered and executed several water treatment schemes, sewer networks and wastewater treatment, including reuse projects. Authored several technical papers on related subjects, the most relevant of which is chapter 18, “COMMON MISTAKES IN PLANNING OF SEWER NETWORKS AND STPs” in the e-book (Environmental Contaminants: Measurement, Modelling and Control) published by IIT Kanpur from Springer Publisher, Singapore. Drafted specifications for conveyance, treatment and recycling of wastewater in Defence establishments and prepared Estimating Data for sewage treatment schemes of MES.

Prof. Bordia is the George J. Bishop, III Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University and Guest Professor Materials Engineering and KPCSD at IIT Gandhinagar. He received his B.Tech from IIT, Kanpur, India and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA. His research is at the intersection of materials and mechanics and is focused on complex material systems for energy, extreme environment, and medical applications. He has authored or co-authored over 170 peer-reviewed technical publications and has received several significant awards, including Fellowship in four professional societies.

The objective of the course is to introduce the powerful framework of Lie groups to students in engineering and mathematics. These tools find application in many subjects - control, image processing, optimisation, mechanics, robotics, synchronisation, and machine learning, to name a few.

About the Instructor
Ravi N. Banavar is currently an Institute Chair Professor in Systems and Control Engineering at IIT Bombay. He received his B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Madras (1986), his Masters (Mechanical, 1988) and Ph.D. (Aerospace, 1992) degrees from Clemson University and the University of Texas at Austin, respectively. He had a brief teaching stint at UCLA during 1991–92, soon after which he joined the Systems and Control Engineering group at IIT Bombay in early 1993. From 2009 onwards, during his tenure as the Convener of the group, the strength of the group grew from 5 to 9 members, with academic strengths in nonlinear control, switched systems, optimisation, geometric mechanics, formation and cooperative control, robotics and adaptive control. He has spent a few sabbatical breaks at UCLA (Los Angeles), IISc (Bangalore) and LSS (Supelec, France.) His research interests are broadly in the field of geometric mechanics, nonlinear and optimal control, with applications to electromechanical and aerospace engineering problems. He is an Associate Editor of the Elsevier journal, Systems and Control Letters, on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Taylor and Francis publication, The International Journal of Control, and a Technical Associate Editor of the IEEE Control Systems Society magazine.

About the Course
What is conflict, how does it reveal difference, and how can we think of conflict as opportunity? Rather than react to conflict with adversity, we will explore how to engage with our differences, how to deeply listen, and how to recognize and break habits of negative reaction. We will build our capacity to generate creative options to effectively communicate and collaborate as part of our daily interactions with self, family, our communities of friends and work/school colleagues. Conflict at home has similar roots to global conflicts. When we truly listen and understand why conflict arises, we can recognize and acknowledge the underlying emotions, learn to pause, think it through, and then act with respect and curiosity. During this workshop, we will explore how to better understand the underlying needs and interests of conflict, how to develop tools to listen and respond as opposed to react. We will also explore tools of mediation and the value of having a neutral listener help to facilitate party self-determination.

About the Instructor
Cynthia Campoy Brophy is an Artist-in-Residence at IIT Gandhinagar. She has worked in the nonprofit sector for many years, with a focus on youth empowerment and the arts. She began her career at The Museum of Contemporary Art and left to launch a nonprofit arts education organization, artworxLA. From founding the organization, to expanding it and eventually passing it on to the next generation of leadership, she worked to link existing resources to young people who lacked access to social, educational, and creative opportunities. She participated in youth empowerment efforts locally and nationally, as an advisory board member and speaker, has been invited to participate in professional learning opportunities including Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Scaling for Impact program and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders/Arts. She has recently studied mediation at Loyola Law School's Center for Conflict Resolution. Current projects include the creation and facilitation of a Resourcing Lab, a curriculum providing skills-building and wellness practices to frontline workers post-Covid; the conceptualization and design of a Centering Center, a multi-sensory space for respite and rejuvenation; the launch of Create Protest, an online marketplace for artist designed statements and resources for activism.

This short course aims to capture the allure and challenges presented by parallel computing, where a large number of computers work together to solve a single computational problem faster. We will begin with a review of the history and the state of the art in parallel computing, and especially the hardware technologies. Current parallel computers, including clusters and supercomputers, consist of a large number of nodes connected by some interconnection network. Each node itself consists of parallel hardware including multiple cores and accelerators. We will briefly review methods for parallel programming within a node, such as OpenMP, to focus more on across-node distributed memory programming. We will discuss scalable parallel algorithms and programming models such as MPI and Charm++. We will then review specific application domains that go beyond traditional applications of high performance parallel computing, including parallel discrete event simulations, and combinatorial search. We conclude with a view of future challenges and opportunities, and how parallel computing will impact you, whether as a practicing engineer or an early-stage researcher. The course assumes basic programming knowledge, using languages such as (one or more of) C, C++, Python, and Fortran. There may be opportunities for writing small parallel programs to increase your familiarity with parallel programming.

About the Course
The learning outcome of this course is to be able to understand research topics in spintronics, the aim of which is to provide new schemes of doing signal and information processing using the spin of the electron instead of its charge. The basic unit of any spintronics device is magnetic and has dimensions in the nanometer range. In order to understand what is happening in this field, therefore, it is necessary to understand nanomagnetism, spin transport, and spin dynamics.

The course is organized so as to be accessible at several entry level of competencies in Physics. The lectures entitled “conceptual …” (4 out of 10) are crucial to achieve the learning outcome, yet easily accessible without a background in advanced mathematics, statistical physics, or quantum mechanics. Thermodynamics of irreversible processes will be reviewed and applied to introduce concepts of spin-dependent transport. Simple quantum mechanics calculations will explain fundamental mechanisms such as exchange, magneto-crystalline anisotropies, RKKY and DM couplings. Magnetic resonance and spin relaxation will be introduced with a semi-classical picture.

About the Instructor
Prof. Jean-Philippe Ansermet is a Swiss Physicist at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne [EPFL]. His research focuses on the fabrication and properties of nanostructured materials as well as spintronics. He obtained a diploma as a Physics Engineer at EPFL in 1980. He went on to get a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where, from 1985 to 1987, he pursued as a post-doc on solid-state NMR studies of molecules bound to the surface of catalysts. From 1987 to 1992, he worked at the materials research center of Ciba-Geigy, on polymers for microelectronics, composites, dielectrics, and organic charge transfer complexes. In March 1992, as a Professor of Experimental Physics, he developed a laboratory on the theme of nanostructured materials and turned full Professor in 1995. Since 1992, he has taught classical mechanics, first to future engineering students, and since 2004 to Physics majors. Since 2000, he has taught thermodynamics also, to the same group of students. Since 1998, he has offered a spintronics and spin dynamics graduate coursed. His research activities include the fabrication and properties of magnetic nanostructures produced by electrodeposition. His involvement since the early days of spintronics has allowed him to gain recognition for his work on giant magnetoresistance (CPP-GMR), and magnetic relaxation of single nanostructures. He was among the leading groups demonstrating magnetisation reversal by spin-polarised currents. Furthermore, his group uses nuclear magnetic resonance, on the one hand, as means of investigation of surfaces and electrodes, on the other hand, as a local probe of the electronic properties of complex ferromagnetic oxides.

About the Instructor
Dr Monal K. Desai has completed MA and MPhil in English Language Teaching and PhD in English. Her primary research includes Blended Learning (amalgamation of online and face-to-face learning) to enhance learners’ English language skills. She has eleven years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has been teaching English with the Writing Studio for the past 4 years.

Ms. Devapreeta Jena has completed her BA in Sociology from Delhi University and MA in Sociology from Ambedkar University, Delhi. Her master's thesis primarily dealt with the impact of neoliberalisation on Higher Education. Her primary interests include critical theory, Marxism, Psychoanalysis and Women's studies. She has worked with governmental organisations like Niti Aayog and the Ministry of Women and Child Development. She keeps an interest in literature, poetry and philosophical texts. This course provides basic knowledge in the topics of seismic risk determination and risk-based assessment of existing buildings. The participants of this course will learn how to compute the seismic risk for buildings, which is a challenging task associated with seismological and structural parameters. They will also learn the background of the risk-based assessment approach used in Switzerland to determine if seismic retrofitting of existing buildings is necessary. The possible translation of such an innovative approach into Indian conditions is not obvious and a critical review of the backgrounds is mandatory before applying such a risk-based assessment in other countries. Comprehensive documentation (research reports, scientific papers and chapter of book) of each topic will be provided to the participants. The course comprises for the last day an application for typical Indian buildings in form of a tutorial.

About the Instructor
Dr Pierino Lestuzzi did his master's in Civil Engineering from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and his PhD from ETH-Zurich, Switzerland. He was a lecturer and senior researcher at EPFL. He was also president of the norm commission SIA 261 (Swiss standard for actions) and a committee member of the Swiss Society of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (SGEB). His primary research interests include Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Risk Assessment and Structural Dynamics. He is now active in the engineering practice by the specialized engineering company Exigo ExpertisesSA in Switzerland.

Global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss are impacting our water, food security and livelihoods. Added to this, the increasing population and finite resources of our planet force us to move away from the “take-make-waste” linear economy system to a “reduce, reuse, and recycle” circular economy, to ensure sustainability.

Accordingly, it is proposed to conduct a short course, “Sustainability, Climate Change and the Circular Economy.” The course is useful for students from all disciplines to provide an overview of concepts that are a part of today's public discourse.

Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are central to our existence. Through this course, the importance of ensuring the circularity of these elements towards providing our food, energy and materials has been illustrated.

About the Instructor
Ambassador V. Ashok, IFS, retired in the rank of Secretary, Government of India in October 2018. After graduating in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1981, he joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1982. He served in various capacities in Hongkong, Malaysia, China, and Sri Lanka. He was India’s Ambassador to Czechia and to the Republic of Zimbabwe. He was the Alternate Governor of India to the IAEA, Vienna, and Consul General to the US West Coast. He is keenly interested in Global Politics, Sustainability, Energy and the Circular Economy and has written articles and blogs on these issues. He has authored a book, Dasavatara – The Ten Avatars of Vishnu. He is a Guest Professor at IIT Gandhinagar and Adjunct Professor, Energy and Environment Programme at NIAS, Bengaluru. He was also a 2018 Garwood Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley , during which period he was an advisor for ‘Smart Village Program’ in Andhra Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh.

Modern digital processors which are meant for industrial and automotive control applications combine high processing speeds with a rich set of internal peripheral modules and memory. Peripheral modules include analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADC and DAC), communication interfaces, timers, sensor interfaces and pulse-width modulated outputs. They have significant amounts of on-chip memory, volatile and non-volatile. Several industrial processors have multiple processing cores.

This course is meant to expose students to the detailed use of features of digital processors oriented towards industrial and automotive applications. It will also introduce students to the software code-generation tool-chains of these processors. The course will use the Texas Instruments TMS320F28379D dual-core digital processor as an example to illustrate features useful for industrial and automotive applications.

Prof. Mukul Chandorkar has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay, since 2000. He has B. Tech., M. Tech. and Ph.D. degrees from IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and the University of Wisconsin- Madison, respectively. He specializes in power electronics and electric machines. Before joining IIT Bombay, he worked with power electronics companies in India, the USA and Europe. About the Course
These notes are based on his personal experience of teaching and learning (Electrical) Engineering for three decades at the Institute of Technology in India. This phase was later followed by an exploration of commonality and differences between education in two democratic societies (namely India and the US). This includes a decade of valuable experience gained at IITGN. The aim is to conceptualize an ‘Indian Scholar’ with similarities but also strong differences from ‘The American Scholar’ (of Ralph Waldo Emerson). This is challenging but, we believe, an achievable task. Maybe it can inspire a series of murals at IITGN which will slowly, within a few generations, bring clarity to the concept of ‘the Indian Scholar’. Restarting the unfinished experiment with truth and non-violence may prove to be a daunting obstacle.

About the Instructor
Professor Sharan obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Waterloo in Canada in 1968. He then joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1969 and remained there till June 2004. From 2004 to 2012, he worked as a distinguished professor at LNMIIT Jaipur. For the last decade, he has been at IIT Gandhinagar and is continuing as Scholar-in-Residence. The undergraduate education of Sharan was at BIT Sindri, from 1957 to 1961, in Telecommunication Engineering. He respectfully and fondly remembers his teachers at Sindri.

Dr. Deepkumar Varma is a Principal Group Product Manager at Microsoft, Bangalore. He currently heads a team of 8 product managers working on building the Apps ecosystem for Microsoft Teams. Prior to Microsoft, he worked with Amazon in launching 20+ experiments in Address experience for customers worldwide, helping reduce the average time to create/select an address by >20% saving 40K hours daily for customers. In his industry experience spanning over 15 years, he has predominantly worked on product management and product strategy in several organizations such as Amazon, Excelity Global, Altisource and Wipro. Dr. Deepkumar has completed his PhD from IIT Bombay in the areas of Decision Sciences and Entrepreneurship. He has pursued his MBA (PGP) from IIM Ahmedabad and has a B.Tech degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from IIT, Roorkee. He is a technology enthusiast who loves learning or imparting knowledge across diverse topics.

Dr.Ramachandran Veetikazhi is a joint doctorate holder from IIT Madras and the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, and currently heads Learning & Development Division in one of India’s biggest commercial enterprises. He is the winner of the Institute Research Award for exceptional research from IIT Madras. Dr.Veetikazhi has over 35 years of executive experience and has won many awards from his organization. Dr.Veetikazhi has published papers in high-impact journals such as the International Journal of Human Resource Management and Group & Organization Management.

The course covers the essentials of general writing skills that professional avenues in engineering and technology require. Learners will explore five main genres of engineering writing: Lab report, project report, slide presentation, poster presentation, and video report. Interactive lectures will be accompanied by in-class writing exercises. In doing so, learners practice key techniques such as clarity and precision.

About the Instructor
Jooyoung Kim is an assistant teaching professor and co-coordinator of the Writing Studio at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar. She received her B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in linguistics from Korea University and the University of Delaware, respectively. Her current research focuses on multilingualism and academic writing, and since 2020, she has developed courses and workshops in English writing and academic communication in the Indian context.
