Message from the Dean
Dear Students,
You are at IIT Gandhinagar after years of your hard work, and support from your family in the journey. You did it to secure an academic experience that leads to a solid foundation for your professional career.
We have faculty members who have studied from renowned universities across the world, classroom infrastructure that is next to none, laboratories that enable world class research, a library that makes available all books, papers and reports needed for courses and research, excellent hostel facilities, one of the best sports infrastructure in the country, and a picturesque campus. Our infrastructure, and academic and hostel culture facilitates seamless access to facilities and places.
We are living in a world that is uncertain and fast-changing. The problems and solutions you learn at IIT Gandhinagar will change with time.The ability to learn by oneself will be a seminal asset going forward. I encourage you to actively participate in classroom discussions, engage in course projects and project courses; make good use of AI-based learning tools and other online resources; jump at the opportunities for physical experimentations. At the core of learning is the ability to ask questions. Therefore, nurturing curiosity is the key.
The ambience around us makes us chase short-term benefits rather disproportionately. However, your career is going to span over decades. You will need to be healthy to make the best out of your life. The old adage – early to bed, and early to rise – may be a good starting point. You may also consider being regular at breakfast, where unlimited quantities of milk, fruit, egg etc. are served. Further, functional pantries are provided at each floor of every hostel, in case you wish to prepare something special for you and your friends.
The problems you will solve after graduation will be large in magnitude, and will require teamwork. Your financial success will also depend on people feeling valued while working with you. IIT Gandhinagar provides numerous opportunities to develop organizational and leadership skills. A large number of technical, cultural and sports events are organized every year by the councils, clubs, Hostel Activities Teams and hobby groups. It may be a good idea to participate in and also help organize some of these events.
This phase of your life will be very exciting. You will learn new things everyday. You will meet people, who will be friends for life. However, evolving as an adult in an intense academic set-up is not without its own challenges. At IIT Gandhinagar, you will always find people who are willing to listen to your issues, and are ready to lend a hand to help you navigate them. Besides your close friends and family members, you can always reach out to your faculty advisor, Head of Department, wardens and other faculty members associated with student affairs, and counselors for help even with the smallest of the concerns. Also, you can visit my office in Academic Block 3 with or without an appointment to discuss any matter. I may be occupied, but there will still be something nice in my fridge for you.
