Shail Goyal Scholarship

Shail Goyal Scholarship has been instituted in the year 2024 by Smt Kumud Kumar and Shri Vipin Kumar, and is open to all female UG (BTech) students. The scholarship amount is Rs. 1 lakh per female student per year and is awarded to one UG (BTech) student every year in order to support internships (international or domestic), special projects and opportunities, financial needs, etc. UG (BTech) female students with a minimum CPI of 6.5 are eligible.

Smt Kumud Kumar, Shail Goyal’s youngest daughter and son-in-law Shri Vipin Kumar, who live in Seattle, Washington, in the USA has instituted this scholarship. Shri Vipin Kumar graduated from IIT Kanpur in Mechanical Engineering in 1970. After getting MS and MBA, he worked in industry for ten years and then, to prepare for a transition to academics, he joined MIT and completed PhD in 1988. He has been in the Mechanical Engineering faculty at University of Washington since then. Vipin had a chance to establish an internship program at IIT Gandhinagar that has brought 4-5 students to University of Washington every summer since 2012. This program provided many opportunities to travel to Gandhinagar and interact with students and faculty, and he feels a strong bond with this institution. Shail Goyal Scholarship is instituted by Smt Kumud Kumar and Shri Vipin Kumar in memory of Shail Goyal (Ammaji). One of seven children, Shail was born in January 1928 in Bulandshahar, UP, India. She grew up in Khurja, UP. She married Dr. Jagdish Prasad Goyal at the tender age of 14 in 1942 and raised three daughters and two sons. After her husband’s death, she spent the last 25 years of her life in the United States and lived to a ripe old age of 94. Shail Goyal was an intelligent, multi-talented lady full of wisdom. She believed in women’s education and women power. The scholarship of Rs. 1 Lakh per year would support the female undergraduate students for their financial needs, funding internships (international or domestic), or special projects and opportunities, etc.
