This course will provide an introductory overview of the multi-disciplinary field of biomedical engineering. We will discuss applications of elementary engineering principles to the analyses of physiological systems for addressing challenges in health care. The course topics will include the following:

New stem cell-assisted technologies such as mitochondrial replacement therapy and generating chimeras for organ transplantation. Background information on the science and ethics of cloning, gene editing methods with special focus on gene editing in stem cells. Combining genome editing and stem cell engineering as link that explores the use of stem cells to understand disease and the use of stem cells as therapeutics. 3. Using Stem Cells to study Diseases: How cultured cells can be used to understand the cause of diseases and to look for drugs that will potentially cure them. We will also explore how stem cells have the potential to help with the study of diseases like hematological disorders, diabetes and Alzheimer's. 4. Using Stem Cells to Treat Diseases: Explore the potential for using stem cells in our own bodies (adult stem cells) to treat hematological disorders, age-related macular degeneration, neuronal-degeneration and like diseases. Some tools for evaluating potential stem cell treatments will be covered in details. 5. The Bioethics of Stem Cell Research and Therapy: Discuss some of the controversies surrounding human embryonic stem cells and the legal, policy, and ethical challenges associated with the use of stem cells in basic and clinical research. Basics of Cognitive Linguistics: This module introduces theoretical assumptions and commitments of Cognitive Linguistics, a functional approach to language use contrasted by formal approaches. In that sense, a fundamental question is asked: “What does it mean to know a language?” Also, two main aspects of Cognitive Linguistics—Language and Cognition—are interpreted; Linguistic Relativity: Beginning with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, this module taps into uniformity and diversity across languages in regard to the associated processing and behavior. The main discussion is on cross-linguistic variations in conceptualizations of time, space, and color; Categorization: Projection of how mental lexicon and concepts operate in the human mind. To understand the hierarchy of concepts, the association of lexical items as well as lexicon-internal polysemy are explored. Theories including the prototype theory are discussed and compared. It leads to the semantic basis of grammatical category; Mental Spaces: Cases of metaphor, metonymy, meronomy, and blends are analyzed with cross-linguistic points of view. The discussion components include the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and the Mental Space Theory; Cognitive Approaches to Grammar: This module discusses the structural consideration of human language processing. 6. Hands-on Experiments: Adulteration in edible oil, added food colors/dyes and sugars in the food items and soft drinks can be tested /detected by simple demonstration based experiments. The Inorganic Chemistry Lab will have the following list of experiments: Synthesis of transition metal complexes: Objective is to learn synthetic skills to prepare coordination complexes of 3d metals [e.g. Ni(II) and Co(II)] from their metal salts. The experiment will also demonstrate the use of few topics “spectrochemical series” and “chelate effect” covered in theory course. Polarimetry: Experiment involves breakdown of disaccharide sugar (sucrose) into its components (glucose and fructose) and kinetic study of this process with the help of Polarimeter instrument. Optical rotation of organic substances (sugars) can be measured and in-turn the rate constant. Gravimetric analysis: Purpose is to learn basic principles of Gravimetry, an analytical method used for the quantitative estimation of analytes (metal present in the solution) by treating it with the reagents to give sparingly soluble products which can be precipitated and weighed. Complexometric titration: Basic principles of titrimetric method will be demonstrated and hardness of water can be calculated by the solutions of of Zn(II), Mg(II) salts and titrating them with EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraaceticacid), a chelating reagent. Recycling of aluminium: This “Green experiment” is used to demonstrate, how aluminium foils can be recycled by converting it to potash alum in the chemical laboratory. Estimation of phosphoric acid: Phosphoric acid is used as acidifier in “Cola drinks” and its amount can be determined by interesting chemical method using molybdenum complex and “Absorption spectrophotometer”. Back Titration: Direct titration of the aluminium ions in the solution is challenging, due to the slow formation of the metal complex with the chelating reagents and non-availability of suitable metal indicator. Thus, back titration of solution containing mixture of ions (Zn 2+ and Al 3+ ) with EDTA can be used effectively to determine the aluminium present in the solution. UV-visible Studies: Experiment includes measurement of optical density (OD) of the given set of metal complexes in solution, which can be correlated with their Crystal Field Stabilization Energy (CFSE in Octahedral geometry). Fluorescence Studies: This involves solution based emission studies of organic dyes prepared in the “Organic Chemistry Lab” and calculate the emission quantum yield with the help of a fluorescence standard. IR Spectral analysis of compounds: Experiment includes hands-on training of IR spectrometer and learn basic interpretation of IR spectra of metal complexes and selected organic compounds; which is a simple analytical tool to find out the functional groups present in the sample.

Biodiesel synthesis using soybean oil and its characterization using TGA- Base catalyzed reaction will be used to synthesize the biodiesel. Due to specific combustion behavior, biodiesel can be easily characterized by TGA. Goals/ tasks

1. Field geology (rock, feature, structure identification on different spatial and temporal scales): Training for developing skills as an independent field geologist. Focus is to learn what to look for in the field and how to identify and scientifically explain the feature you observed.
2. Learning a few easy mobile devices (compass, brunton, clinometer) and topo sheet etc.
3. Mapping and /or sample collection techniques: Rock/ sand/soil/water sample collection for various analytical purposes. Collection of oriented rock samples and learning how to procure samples for various geochronological measurements.
4. Reading/analyzing features and documentation.
5. Report writing: A detailed field report has to be submitted within 10 days of completion of the fieldwork and students will be evaluated on the basis of the report and performance in the field.

Skills that can be achieved

1. Identifying geological and geomorphic features, sample collection and process interpretation.
2. Bridging field data with model simulations.
3. Marine Structures, Life and Pollution.
4. Features of the biodiversity/national forest: Components, Conservation and Survey

Prospect areas

1. Mountain belt/ hills: Understanding the geology of the hills and rock formations, finding structural features showing active tectonics and surface features, erosion etc. These areas need extensive geological mapping. It will be a mapping intensive course. (Kutch-Bhuj area, Aravalli range near Gujarat-Rajasthan border, Deccan traps in northern Maharastra, Northwestern Himalaya etc.)
2. Beach / coastal areas: Study of sedimentary features and the role of sea. Understanding the vegetation. Study of nearby hills and their geology. Their role in sediment transport and above all, how sea level change occurs and how does it affect the landscape and surface processes (e.g.: Cambay area, Karnataka coast, south-Maharastra coast etc.)
3. National parks and Sanctuaries: Geology, vegetation and fauna of the national park areas. Understanding the behaviour of the fauna. Mapping will not be possible in the national parks, but in nearby areas. (e.g. Gir National park, Ranthambore national park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Pench Tiger reserve etc.).
4. River systems and water bodies: Understanding the river systems and their evolution. Role of tides in river confluences near sea and related deposits. How vegetation and fauna depend on the dynamic nature of the delta. (e.g.: Narmada delta).
5. Mining Areas: Mine visits are essential for understanding how geology and engineering gets coupled. The focus is to learn the geology and genesis of the ore mineral, understanding the mining techniques, safety protocols and reserve estimation. (e.g.: Coal mines in central India, manganese mines in Maharashtra, lignite mines in Gujarat).
6. Landslides and landfill: Understanding the processes related to landslides, different type of landslides, methodology for slope stability analysis.
