Professional Leader’s PhD Programme


Applications are invited for the newly launched Professional Leader’s PhD Programme of IIT Gandhinagar.

This programme offers a unique opportunity for senior leaders in academia/ industry/ administration to further their education, gain new perspectives, and contribute to global causes. It is open only to senior leaders in industry, academia, or administration.


  • Eligibility Criteria

    • The candidate should have been or continuing to be in senior leadership positions in industry, academia, or administration, with a minimum work experience of 20 years.
    • The minimum academic eligibility criteria for admissions to this programme is the successful completion of a postgraduate degree programme or a 4-year bachelor degree programme.

    • Admissions to this programme will be a rolling process and shall be open throughout the year.

  • Credits Requirements

    Credits Requirements


    • The minimum credit requirement for graduation will be 100 for candidates admitted to this program.
    • Out of the credits earned for PhD, a maximum of 24 credits may be earned through coursework (online or offline), and a minimum of 80 credits are to be earned through research. Please note that there is no minimum requirement of coursework and meeting the minimum credit requirement for PhD shall not automatically lead to a PhD degree.
    • The Doctoral Studies Committee (DSC) may advise the candidates to acquire credits through Independent Research and/or Independent Seminar also. In such cases, the maximum credits shall be limited to 08.
    • The requirement for Aarohan, Comprehensive Viva-Voce, Writing, and Physical Education courses is waived off. This is because we believe that senior leaders, with their extensive experience, can demonstrate their comprehensive understanding and communication skills in other ways, and may not need to fulfill these specific course requirements.
    • PhD students must complete their thesis work before they are allowed to submit their thesis. Therefore, they may need to fulfill additional credits beyond 100.
    • Students should register for a minimum of 8 credits in regular semesters. Maximum registration can be up to 16 credits in regular semesters and four credits in summer term/winter break.
  • Academic Performance Requirement

    Academic Performance Requirement


    • The academic performance requirement will be the same as that of the regular PhD programme.
    • Considering the significant experience in industry/academia/administration, candidates may request a waiver of the qualifying examination.
    • Candidates are expected to clear their proposal defense within two years of joining the PhD programme.
    • There shall be no residency requirement except for any course registered offline, which must be carried out while being resident.
