Ahmedabad (also called Amdavad) is Gujarat's biggest city and a bustling metropolis with a long history. Founded in 1411, the Ahmedabad of the 21st excellent museums, fine restaurants and fabulous night markets. Among the many highlights are:

Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi set up his headquarters during the long struggle for India"s independence. It presently houses a museum and gallery.

Jama Masjid built in 1424, one of the largest mosques in the Indian subcontinent.

Sidi Saiyad Mosque, known for its intricately carved spiderweb fine stone latticework windows (jails), depicting the "tree of life".

Kankaria Lake and the Sabarmati Waterfront recreation spaces in the heart of the city
